George Bush Announces War Against Iraq
Former President George W. H. Bush gave a persuasive speech convincing the American people, world leaders, and the Middle East that we had to go to war against Iraq to free Kuwait. Bush gave this speech just two hours after allied air forces started attacks on Iraq. President Bush painted a picture with his words how horrific Saddam Hussein was to Kuwait. He said that “Saddam Hussein systematically raped, pillaged, and plundered a tiny nation, no threat to his own” (Bush). Bush’s speech convinced the people around the world we had to wage war against Iraq because Saddam Hussein was killing innocent people and didn’t abide by the United Nations Security Council’s peaceful talks or sanctions.

He used reassuring words like how we had a highly motivated and trained army. He also stated that the military commanders knew what was necessary to conquer Iraq as quickly as possible. He also affirmed the people that our troops had the greatest possible support in the world. Another way Bush made the American people believe our troops would succeed and free Kuwait was by interviewing a Marine Lance Corporal, Marine Lieutenant General, Master Sergeant and an Army Lieutenant. The agreement from interviewing all of these people was that they would succeed at their mission to free Kuwait. President Bush also reached a mature audience by telling them that this wouldn’t be another Vietnam. Those people he was trying to reach understood what this meant. It meant that this was going to be a short battle and that we would win with very little
