After World War One, the threatening power, Germany, was penalized to an extent that eventually backfired on her opposition, the Allies. The Treaty of Versailles’ objective was to bring about peace to the world by limiting the power of threatening nations. Germany was considered responsible for World War I, so she was penalized tremendously; Germany was restricted on her military, territory, and unifications. However, appeasement allowed the terms of the treaty to be broken. Germany then annexed more land and began her aggression which initiated World War II. Hitler criticised how Poland treated her citizens and discussed how he could rectify the situation as leader; it appeared as though Hitler would try to claim Poland as he claimed Czechoslovakia. However, in August of 1939, Germany signed a Nonaggression Pact with the Soviet Union. This stated that Germany and the Soviet Union would not attack each other and that they would split Poland between the two. Despite the fair agreement, Germany decided to invade Poland with the blitzkrieg, a surprise attack. The Soviet Union and Germany began annexing weaker lands, and other nations supplied aid or fought for their alliances. Tensions built, and World War II started. Some estimate that over 75,000,000 casualties were in World War II and that Germany was the one to blame. Overall, the Treaty of Versailles did not only fail in keeping peace, but it caused conflict.
