Americans ruled the automotive industry for a short time. Henry Ford was completing mass production that became standard with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler emerging as the “Big Three” auto companies by 1920. J. Frank and Charles E. Duryea were bicycle mechanics out of Springfield, Massachusetts and developed the first successful American gasoline automobile in 1893. They won the first American automobile race in 1895 and made the first sale of an American-made gasoline car the next year. This was considered a breakthrough.
