Like a Gemini, hip hop's personality has always been split into two. On one side you have a young, wild, & free, spirit that is looking for a place to party & bullshit. On the other side you have a conscious mind that is aware of it's surroundings, what's being said & done to it, & is mindful of how all these things & it's actions effect it. Even though it started in 1973, the development of hip hop accelerated thanks to the 1977 blackout. Indeed, as the instruments needed were expensive, many people took advantage of the blackout and stole what was useful to start a career in hip hop. Moreover, the four essential elements of hip hop are DJing, B-boying (breakdance), MCing (rap) and graffiti writing. Of course, all these elements already existed before the development of hip hop but they were at the core of the hip hop culture at the time.
Hip Hop culture with the black community and amongst the world has altered in several ways. Hip Hop today has certainly devolved in ways that have effected the mentality of humility, practical the younger generation. Hip Hop relays a much different message and most of it makes sexual references toward women and speak on things such as drugs and money. This is not to say that music in the 80s and 90s did not reference or speak about the same things but today it is presented in a way that is a lot more opened, acceptable and vulgar. Hip Hop within the 80s, 90s and early 2000s spoke about life and the issues that the black community faces.
In the early 1970 's, disco music ruled the airways and had a huge impact on the American audience. It started by an urban gay culture in New York City and had strong connections to R&B and Funk. But during the same era, a man named DJ Kool Herc migrated to the Bronx from Jamaica with what was thought of at the time to be an unusual playlist of R&B, funk, soul and obscure disco. That was the birth of hip-hop. It emerged to become the voice of a generation that wanted to be heard and refused to be brought down by urban poverty.

Crime, poverty, and drugs were a huge struggle to these residents and the lyrics of hip hop often reached out to these victims.
