I think that hip-hop has had a huge effect on pop culture today and it has become very hard for young people to stray away from it because it can be found everywhere in society. These artists are being looked at as icons now and that does not seem to be changing for a long time to come. The types of images that are accepted in hip-hop are the ones that make you look as tough as you possibly can be. If you display a soft side at all you are frowned upon by society so it is very important for these artists to keep their tough guy image on them at all
Classic Rap The first ‘commercially successful rap song’ (Genius) was Rapper’s Delight by the Sugarhill Gang in 1979. Although Afrika Bambataa and other rappers featured rap in their songs first, Sugarhill Gang was known for composing a song which popularized rap. For my ethnomusicology project proposal, I have chosen to focus on the history of Rap Music in New York. My reasoning for choosing the state of New York was mostly in part because of the demographics pertaining to the people who live there. Life has not been easy for many African Americans and other minorities, especially early on during the birth of Rap Music. This leads to the stories of struggles and hardships, which makes Rap Music personally favorable to myself. Another reason for wanting to do my ethnomusicology project on Rap Music in New York is because some of the biggest names in Rap Music have gotten their start in New York.
Intro: In recent years, rap music gradually accepted by people, especially the youth. In all types of rap, West Coast Rap and East Coast Rap are the most distinctive styles. They had an important impact on future generations.

The Impact of Hip-Hop Ever since its birth in the 1970s in West Bronx, Hip Hop has been known as “Gangsta” music and most commonly associated with black culture. Since its creation it has become a fast growing genre of music and has growing fame all over the world. The popularity of it has increased to all races, age and gender. Rock and rap are popular all over the world today and have always made a big influence on the people’s lifestyles. Rock is the genre of music that evolved from different genres like country and blues. At first, it had no name, but then the name “Rap” came to life meaning someone who was talking or having a conversation while music played in the background. The rapper or MC that made this genre come to life was named D.J. Kool. Most people may not realize how rap first started, it has changed through time, or the influence it has had on other people.
