For my ethnomusicology project proposal, I have chosen to focus on the history of Rap Music in New York. My reasoning for choosing the state of New York was mostly in part because of the demographics pertaining to the people who live there. Life has not been easy for many African Americans and other minorities, especially early on during the birth of Rap Music. This leads to the stories of struggles and hardships, which makes Rap Music personally favorable to myself. Another reason for wanting to do my ethnomusicology project on Rap Music in New York is because some of the biggest names in Rap Music have gotten their start in New York. New York was a prime location for the development of Rap. By focusing my ethnomusicology project on Rap, I will have the ability to outline the birth, the contributors, the hardships, the meaning behind and much more the lyrics and the people who listen to and create the music. …show more content…

Questions that will be pondered and answered through research will be: I want to learn why the music was created? Where was Rap Music created? How hard is it for new artist to enter the industry? What are the demographics of the people who played a role in Rap Music in New York? Does public opinion change the music they create? When outsiders critique Rap Music as music of the devil does it affect the artist? Another question that I think of great importance is does money change an artist? I believe the questions listed previously will bring great detail to my project and allow for a better understanding of Rap Music as a whole. These questions will help broaden the scope of it
