After the American Revolution and the loss of many colonies in the United States, the British decided to turn their focus to Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Ocean. Using the ideology of Imperialism, the British decided to expand their territory around the globe. The defeat of Napoleon, (Emperor of France) there was no one to oppose their rule. Meanwhile, the British empire was expanding their territory, the ideology of Imperialism spread to other countries. During this period of time, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Portugal were competing to gain control of Africa. The main reason to colonize was to enslave the population and to extract the resources available. This did not cause the war directly, but this scramble for Africa caused an environment where European countries thought only they could control Africa if all other nations were eliminated.
