You may know Jackie Robinson for his astonishing baseball skills, but did you know that he was also an advocate for civil rights? Jackie broke the color barrier in 1947 when he joined the MLB and became the first colored player to play in it. Jackie spoke on and off the field about his beliefs. Jackie fought for black rights and equal pay in America. Jackie Robinson contributed to the Civil Rights Movement by being the first African American to play Major League Baseball, standing up for what he believed in, and fighting through challenges. After a few years in the league, people started to accept him, they would hand out pins that said, “I’m Rooting for Jackie Robinson.” Fans also made red, white, and blue ribbons to symbolize that African Americans deserved the right to participate in the post World War II property (“Jackie Robinson, Paving the Way Forward”). After leaving a legacy in the league, the MLB decided to have a Jackie Robinson day to commemorate Jackie. Everybody around the league wears Jackie's number, number 42, on April 15th Jackie's impact on the game of baseball is remembered every year by the amazing moments that happen on that day. Another way Jackie stood for the Civil Rights Movement was by not listening to what other people said and doing what he felt was right.
