The Harlem Renaissance was an important time period for African-American history. It was an cultural, artistic, and intellectual movement that started in the early 1900s in Harlem, New York. It was the rebirth and revival of a variety of things like music, art, and literature. There was a lot of famous people during this time period that made an influence for black African-Americans for many years. There have been many names that have made contributions to the cultural, artistic, and intellectual developments in the Harlem Renaissance. These names include Langston Hughes, Aaron Douglas, and Marcus Garvey.
Langston Hughes’ poetry made a big impact on the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes’ writings were very well-known during the Harlem Renaissance, and his writings included poetry, plays, and novels. Hughes’ writings were important because it “confronted racial stereotypes, protested social conditions, and expanded African America's image of itself” (West). He made many attractive and and beloved murals, illustrations, and paintings that expressed African-American culture. His works on his murals inspired many others around him and his “outstanding design for the mural attracted other leading black artists to the genre for decades to come.” (Otfinoski). His art made a contribution to the artistic development in the Harlem Renaissance because he encouraged many other black African-Americans to fight for their rights and have hope.
