Malcolm X’s Impact on the Civil and Human Rights Movements

“By any means necessary” was a phrase famously coined by the black Muslim civil and human rights leader, Malcolm X, who fought for the liberation of African Americans; in turn, Malcolm X’s call to African Americans inspired them to fight for freedom, justice, and equality, even if it meant enduring the worst of times to reach the best of times. Shortly after his birth, Malcolm’s family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and relocated to Lansing, Michigan, shortly thereafter. Malcolm had many siblings. In his autobiography, Malcolm X writes, “ I was my father’s second son. I had three siblings by my father’s previous marriage- Ella, Early, and Mary, who lived in Boston, Massachusetts. He had met and married my mother in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where their first child, my oldest brother, Wilfred was born. Then, they moved to Omaha where Hilda and Philbert were born (The Autobiography of Malcolm X, pg#2). Malcolm’s father, Reverend Earl Little, was a Baptist minister. Regarding the events surrounding Malcolm’s father’s death, Malcolm X states, “ One afternoon in 1931 when Wilfred, Hilda, Philbert and I came home, my mother and father were having one of their arguments.
