Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Dream
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that” (King). If it weren’t for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., our world would be a whole lot different. He helped create a peaceful and just community within our nation, helping to protest one of the world’s greatest injustices; inequality. Dr. King inspired us, brought us together, and his work still influences us today.
Dr. King was born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He married Coretta Scott on June 18th, 1953, and had four children, Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertine. Before being assassinated on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. King …show more content…

One incident in particular was in Birmingham, Alabama. When he was in jail, he wrote a letter called, “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” In his letter he states, “One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws” (King). The quote talks about only having to obey laws that are fair. Dr. King was an inspiration because of his dedication to having equality.
When Dr. King was a child, practically everything was segregated. In the Southern part of the United States, every water fountain was sectioned off to separate races, every restaurant had different entrances, and every bus had segregated seating. All of those things had some sort of separation between the African-Americans and the whites. If you didn’t follow these laws, you were punished. Fire hoses were used to disperse protests, which led to injuries, people were beaten, and even hung. The March on Washington included over 200,00 people, and took place in Washington D.C. Even though Dr. King devoted himself and his time to protesting for civil rights, he was always peaceful about it. Not once did he give in to violence.
Dr. King is an inspiration to me because he fought for something he believed in, even though others thought he was wrong. He was peaceful, and never gave up. He is an inspiration because he showed that anything is possible as long as you try hard enough. Others were inspired by his words, “It is worse to see somebody not speak up at the site of something wrong, than the wrong itself” (King). What Martin Luther King Jr. meant by that was, the situation only gets worse if you never say anything about it.
If Dr. King hadn’t devoted his time and effort into peaceful protesting for civil rights, our lives would have been so much different.We would have been segregated, known fewer people, and had unjust treatment of the African-American community.
