Major Mike Pfannenstiel, who fights for justice at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, by preventing and controlling crime in the community. He has dark hair, a lot of muscles, and is very thin. He has been working for the Sheriff’s Department for 31 years. During this time, he was a school resource officer, detective, patrol officer, and an undercover officer. Currently, he is in charge of the operations division, which includes the drug unit, investigations, patrol, and warrants. Before becoming an administrator in this division, he was an officer in each of those departments. I started this interview by asking what kind of training someone would need to be in his position. For example, he hates the paperwork aspect of being an administrator. Because some positions are public offices, politics are involved. It has made his job difficult. Also, Mike has seen that in some areas of Johnson County, there is a bad attitude towards law enforcement. “It’s them versus us mentality,” said Pfannenstiel. According to Pfannenstiel, the most difficult case he had to work involved sexual abuse of a guy named Bob molesting his two nieces. Pfannenstiel was responsible for going through the Bob’s computer to find evidence of the crime. The hardest part for him was that there were children involved. The most rewarding part about it was getting the kids out of the situation and putting the bad guys in jail. When he is not out in the community fighting for justice, Pfannenstiels’s typical day includes sitting in meetings, because he is now an administrator. He gives directions to his officers in various units that he oversees. Prior to becoming a supervisor, he had to wear a police uniform but now he dresses in a button down shirt, khakis, loafers, and a tie. First he told me about a homicide that occurred in Desoto, Kansas. It involved a guy named Steve having someone kill his girlfriend Rebecca. Police had to take this case to court three times because the jury couldn't agree on a verdict. The first two times it was a hung jury, is when the jury can’t decide on a verdict, because someone on the jury didn't like police officers. They didn't trust or believe anything the police were saying. Finally, the third time they took the case to court, the guy plead guilty. He’s in jail today. In addition to the homicide case, he also was involved in a suicide incident of a guy named Ryan and his baby named Helen. It all started with Ryan getting into an argument with the mom of the baby. Both were drunk. After the argument, Ryan walked down to the railroad track with Helen and laid on the track with Helen on his chest. When the train came, he leaned forward and looked back that is when the train hit them both. Consequently, his arms were cut off by the train. Officers had to help identify the bodies.
