Born on the fourth of April, 1889, a boy by the name of Adolf Hitler would one day be known around the world as one of the most evil dictators to have ever lived. Adolf’s early youth seemed to have been highly influenced by his father until his death in 1903, after which he began to exhibit rebellious behavior. He started to fail in school and eventually quit formal education all together in 1905 and started exploring the depths of his artistic levels. In 1907, when his mother died, he moved to Vienna, planning to enrol in a famed academy of fine arts. The oratorio originated in Italy, and was considered a musical story based on an Old Testament character from the Bible. Even though Giacomo Carissimi was the father of this genre, with his work Jepthe, the oratorio as we know it today was not developed until later by the hands of Schütz, J.S. Bach, Handel, and Mendelssohn. This paper will discuss the contributions to the genre from these great composers. Gustav Mahler was born on the seventh of July in eighteen sixty. His place of birth was Bohemia, Austria, and he was born to Jewish Tavern Keepers. Mahler’s early life was full of strife and dysfunction, watching his father mistreat his mother due to discrepancies in their social status. This caused Mahler to develop a psychosomatic limp, which imitated the lameness of his mother’s leg, whom he was most attached too in all the world. Mahler also watched many of his 11 siblings lose battles with illness and became fixated on death at a particularly early age, furthering his alienation from what most people would have considered to be normal.
The Baroque period was identified as the “Age of Absolutism” because it was a period where rulers practiced their full power to control subjects. Also during the Baroque time frame music became more leant about where it was played. Instead it only being played at churches and occasionally in some courts, it was being played at specific functions and operas. It was at this time that operas were established for the first time in history. Musicians at this time were employed for aristocrat’s courts, churches and operas although they were considered high positions yet still viewed as servants.

Music Appreciation Essay Music today is something we can easily take for granted. Through class I have learned several important influences in music. The most significant composer in my opinion was Ludwig van Beethoven. I feel his works broadened music and took it to a whole new level.
Beethoven showed his musical talents at his young age. In 1792 he moved to Vienna and spent rest of his live there. He studied with Haydn and soon he gained his reputation as a virtuoso pianist that often showing his ability of improvisation during performance. Beethoven’s career as a composer can be categorized into three periods: (1) the peak of Classical period where most of his works shown influences of his teacher Joseph Haydn, as well as influences from other great musicians of all time such as Mozart.
