Vienna during Mahler’s time was a cultural garden, thriving with different ethnicities and religions. However, Mahler felt displaced to Viennese society, he had “been a Bohemian in German-speaking Austria, an Austrian in Germany, and a Jew throughout the world” (Botstein 7). Despite this dislocation, Mahler contributed greatly to Vienna’s culture and traditions. Mahler was drawn to Vienna, he knew he had a role to play in the city, that could not be replicated (7). Mahler flourished in his multi-layered music. His music allows the audience to delve into the dynamics of Viennese cultural politics. Most of Mahler’s opposition came from anti-Semitic groups, but this did not prevent Mahler from creating music. In Vienna, he was influenced by his
