There is a wide range of art; paintings, drawings, sculptures, social commentary, documentaries, sock puppet shows. But is all of that really art? Does being able to recreate an exact image make you artistic? Videotaping and adding commentary make you creative? Are sock puppet shows considered artwork? I am interested in looking at two figures that address what art can be. First there is Frederich Nietzsche. He was a late nineteenth century philosopher. In Nietzsche’s “The Birth of Tragedy”, he explores Greek art in the progression of mere appearance and reasoning, the Apollonian, along with feelings and intoxication, or the Dionysian. Nietzsche is the artwork and Freud is more about the artist itself. Why that distinction matter is that the artwork is about itself, and despite the artist making it, it should stand on its own. We do not too interested in fulfillment you achieve by making the work, we wish to view he work through out own perspective and perceive our own fulfillment from it like watching a movie and the protagonist wishes, we place ourselves as the protagonist (Freud 39). Much is the other way around for the artist. The artist may not be interested in combining reason and feeling, he or she may be conscious of it when making it, however I agree with Freud that the artist is more concerned with fulfilling a certain desire. The artwork may be about he female naked body, acknowledging a desire for intimacy from the opposite sex. The way they may come across combining Dionysian and Apollonian is when they tone down their phantasy. The artist does not really the complete truth of the phantasies as it makes it too personal for the viewers to enjoy and the viewers can end up rejecting the work. So by toning down, I mean using images that are universal, that is the Apollonian to be the symbolism for the higher truth (Dionysian) (Freud 40). That way, it can be pleasurable for the viewers to
