Throughout history, power has been desired and achieved by many, as well as seized and lost. Often times, conflicts in recent history have involved power struggles between nations. It is this struggle that has very well shaped our history. The desire to stop people from having power was very prevalent in the 20th century. Specifically, attempting to stop the spread of communism and its ideology around the world. Shortly after the conclusion of World War II, Winston Churchill spoke his famous “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster College. In this speech, he stated that there is a metaphorical iron curtain dividing Europe, with states that fall under Soviet influence such as Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, and Vienna from the rest of the continent. …show more content…

Bin Laden led al-Qaeda from its founding in 1988 to his death in 2011. Like many men in his country, he was believed highly in the Muslim faith. He joined the resistance that fought against the Soviet occupation in 1979. He didn’t like other countries occupation of their sacred land, this being one of the reasons for his hatred of America. In fact, he attacked US embassies throughout the 1980s and 90s, including the bombing of a US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998. However, bin Laden’s most evil act have shaped the modern world: the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. On this day, terrorists, with the support of bin Laden, hijacked passenger planes in the US, crashing them into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field. The horrifying event claimed the lives of 2,996 people. This changed the way travel and security worked. Many Americans feared people of the Muslims, thinking they are terrorists. This shaped modern history, caused the War on Terror. It also lead to the creation of US organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration, and laws such as the Patriot Act.
