Philip II of Spain was a devout Roman Catholic who was born in 1527 and died in 1598. He governed over Spain through her so called “Golden Age” but saw his beloved country decline economically eventually becoming bankrupt and suffer a crippling loss in the Spanish Armada in 1588. Philip II had been married to Mary Tudor before her death effectively making him King of England but he had little influence there as Parliament refused to crown him jointly with Mary.Contemporaries and historians both described him as vain, bigoted, ruthless and ambitious. Upon his accession to the Spanish throne in 1556 he set about attempting to establish his accession to the English throne, firstly with a marriage proposal to Elizabeth then by ensuring Mary, Queen of Scots named him as her successor if she ever controlled England. …show more content…

Philip II’s desire was to get a Catholic England and for it to be under his control. But as Elizabeth rejected his marriage proposal, he became dependent on Mary Queen of Scots succeeding Elizabeth to the throne, either by natural causes or by any of the number of plots against her. Getting England back under Catholic rule would help to reunite England with the rest of Europe. However Philip’s hopes to take power over England ended with the execution of Queen Mary of Scots. It was expected that with the execution of Mary of Scots the threats towards Elizabeth would come to an end, however this was not the case. The threats to the Crown continued for the Catholics. The regicide of a Catholic monarch lead to the Catholic Europe population becoming increasingly infuriated.
