Rock music came to be around late the 1940s early 1950s; being developed by blues, country, gospel, and R&B. Considering this rock music hadn’t really been around much by the time the 50s came. The first recorded rock song in March, 3 1951 was rocket88 by Ike turner and Jackie Brenston. Rock music even though it was a fairly new form of music had managed to form a generation gap between the youth and the older generations.
While the older generation was listening too Frank Senatra, Tony Bennet, and Perry Como. Teens where listening too Ike Turner, Jacky Brenston, and Alan Freed. Since 1952 television had become a new and cooler form of entertainment. Djs playing rock songs was radios fighting chance against television. Parents monitoring them at home and the concerts they when to helped the radio gain popularity form television. Radios decreased people’s interest in buying records.
In search for profits, major company’s tired finding a way for people to buy records. In this attempt they created crossovers. Crossovers are records that where designed for a specific audience, but brought in other listeners and audiences. According to Mitchell k. Halls book, Emergence of Rock and Roll: Music and the Rise of American Youth Culture. “A record targeting a particular market, but also attracted other listeners, such as a country song bought by young urban whites, was known as a “crossover.” In end crossovers helped break music barriers created by the rock and roll era.
Rock and roll appeared safer thanks to the development of crossovers and covers. One artist in particular helped rock and rolls image to the public. His name is Pat Boone, he resembled a more charming, cleaner version of Elvis Presley. Pat Boone played rock covers in his own pop musical way.
