Rock is a musical style that has been around for centuries. To me, rock music has its own attitude. When I think of this style of music I think of heavier, louder, and stronger music. Electric guitars and the drums are typically the instruments I think of. However, I have realized that a song doesn’t have to be “head banging” to be considered rock music. In the past Elvis Presley was considered the “king” of rock. He was an icon in the music industry for his rock and roll sounds. Yet, to me his music isn’t the typical heavy rock sound, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t rock music. Today there are so many different rock sounds, that it can be confusing. Rock to me is a cultural phenomenon that will continue to change in the future. Rock music is very important to our society. It influences people’s cultures and opinions on certain situations. Whether it is heavy metal, alternative, or classic rock, rock music continues to shape and change our society. I believe rock music is alive and well. There are so many new artists that consider their music “rock”, but others may consider it a different genre. This is what makes it so unique and powerful. Rock artists and groups such as, Jimmy Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Billy Joel all have different unique sounds, but are still considered rock. Many people think that is has to be dark and vulgar. However, there are many artists that have songs that are lighthearted and emotional. Listening to the lyrics more closely, instead of just the music really made me understand this. Personally, I believe many genres such as pop and country are changing to what society wants. They have lost the uniqueness and quality of music. They make music to just sell records instead of getting the enjoyment out of making music.
