Scotland contains about 790 islands and sadly only about 130 are inhabited, due to the amount of immigrants that left Scotland to come to America, all of the islands were left to be uninhabited. During the British Civil War in the early 1600’s, many Scottish immigrants started to arrive in America due to economic depression that increased poverty issues or force of passage from past mistakes during the fight for independence with Britain. Upon arrival, Scots easily gained jobs due to their educational heavy homes in Scotland and turned out to be beyond successful. At the same time, spreading their culture, new ideas and traditions in America, mainly in Appalachia. Not only that, but most Scots were believed to be stingy and rude, coming up with the phrase, “Cold as Presbyterian charity” as well as the word hillbilly, since Scots were seen as lazy, good-for-nothing, people who lived in the mountains and drinking moonshine all the time. However, the Scots quickly put these negative stereotypes to shame, due to the fact that Scots were already well educated when they came over from Scotland so it was easier for scots to get new jobs in America as lawyers and physicians; those who did not go into educational based jobs usually went into farming, herding, and heavy industry based jobs due to that is what they were used to doing back in Scotland (Vecoli, 1205). The Scots were even successful when it came creating a new religion, Sandemanians. Sandemanians used to be known as Glasites back in Scotland but because they were not able to spread further, once they moved to America, Robert Sandeman was able to recreate the religion and watch it grow at a faster rate than it did back in Scotland (Gormley).
