The Beatles Did you know The Beatles are the most successful musical act of all time? With an estimated 183 million units sold globally, they top the list of best-selling artists. They made a lasting impact on the history of music. The Beatles were arguably the most influential band because of their innovation, unique music, and impact on popular culture. The history of The Beatles began in Liverpool in 1957 when Paul McCartney met John Lennon. Lennon had a band called The Quarrymen, which focused on skiffle music and rock and roll. Lennon invited McCartney to join, and he accepted. George Harrison joined after McCartney recommended the band to him. The band developed over time. They went for a few name changes, such as Johnny and The Moondogs and Japage 3, but eventually settled on The Beatles. They had a few different drummers before they ultimately decided on Ringo Starr in 1962, just in time for the band's success. Their music spread quickly throughout the UK, inciting the beginning of intense enthusiasm for the band, known as Beatlemania.
