The Enlightenment in Europe was also known as the Age of Reason. It was a philosophical movement that was based on reason, liberty, and science rather than superstitions and faith. It allowed new thoughts and ideas to prosper among the people, and changed the way they lived their lives. The Age of Reason led to revolution because the Enlightenment writers expressed their ideas on human rights and problems that went on socially, economically, and politically. These ideas prospered throughout the people which changed the way they think and live their daily lives. The Enlightenment took place during the late seventh century. The Enlightenment writers had many different views on human rights. Thomas Jefferson was from Virginia. He was an American Founding Father, and was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence. His views on human rights were equality and liberty among the people, and the promotion of religious tolerance and ending slavery (supp 1, A and D). John Locke inspired others to think differently politically and socially. He believed that all men came into this world equal, unless God proclaimed differently. He believed that if someone invaded others' rights then they should be punished, and the judges should be unbiased during the case (supp 3, A). This inspired the government to see people as equal, and it also inspired people in the law enforcement to execute those laws. Adam Smith inspired others to think differently economically and socially. He believed that people should work for what they want in life. He thought that labor would impact society and the government should let people work for a successful life (supp 3, C). This inspired people to work for wealth and achieve their goals.
