One significant social event that happened in 1601 that may have heavily influenced Shakespheres writing was the rebellion led by Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. This event is more commonly known as the Essex Rebellion. However, it was an unsuccessful attempt to dethrone Queen Elizabeth I. The Earl of Essex, one of the Queen’s closest friends, had fallen out of favor and instead led a group of dissatisfied and unhappy people in a plot to try and seize power. The rebellion was quickly stopped, and Essex was arrested. He was tried for treason, and executed.
