In chapter 1 of Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, by Glencoe, the main idea is exploration and its impact on the Americas. Clearly, exploration made a huge impact on the world by discovering new places, finding new routes, and riches. Portugal and Spain unleashed a new era of exploration by searching for sea routes to Asia by ship, Portugal mainly started the “Age of Exploration” because a sailor named Bartholomeu Dias reached the southern tip of Africa which was new land to them and a little while after, Vasco da Gama found the “long awaited” Sea route to Asia which inspired other people to sail as well. Other people had different goals while exploring the sea, like Ferdinand Magellan who was the leader of the first crew to sail around the world.

This all changed in 1967 when the referendum was introduced that allowed the Commonwealth Government to take all the power and created equal rights and laws for both Indigenous Australians and white people. The Federal Government apposed this referendum due to the success of the inspiration that the Freedom Rides had on people to change how the rightful owners of the land were being treated. The 1965 freedom ride was held by a group of university students from Sydney.
When the Europeans came to the Americas, they didn’t know how to treat the Native Americans because they had never encountered other people who weren’t of their race. So Europeans developed this belief that they were superior then Natives and Africans. They took their resources and took advantage of them. Europeans also tried to change their beliefs and culture, which caused much resistance and revolts from the Natives and Africans.
The Europeans were able to conquer the Americas because even though it was by “accident,” they were still more prepared for what was to come. Jared Diamond calls the European “accidental conquerors.” Diamond calls his theory geographical luck and concludes that the only way the Europeans were able to dominate the Americas was because of the way the ocean patterns happened to flow. The geographical wind patterns caused the ships to sail towards the Incas and the Aztecs and when the Europeans arrived they tried to conquer the Aztecs and Incas, they succeed for a number of reasons. One reason that they were able to conquer the Americas was because of their technological advances.
When the Europeans came over, they brought diseases and wars which caused the Native American populations have a sharp decline. This happened because the diseases were killing off millions of Natives while wars between the Native Americans and Europeans cause more Natives to be killed because the weapons that the Europeans had were more advanced than the Native American weapons. This allowed for Europeans to come to the Americas and colonize without much issue because of the lack of Native Americans that were trying to stop
