World War I was a series of battles that lasted from 1914 – 1918. The war was started on the Balkan Peninsula then quickly spread across Europe. The war was started because of militarism, the alliance system, imperialism, and nationalism. The two sides fighting in the war was the Triple Entente with Great Britain, Europe, and Russia, and the Triple Alliance with Germany, Austria Hungry, and Italy. This war was drastically different from previous wars because it was an all-out war, and of attrition with no side winning. World War I was a war of attrition because of new technology, a change in tactics, and it was fought on a multi front. Technology that came during the industrial revolution had a major impact on the way the war was fought. New guns, airplanes, Tanks, Long rang artillery, and poisons all affected the way the war was fought in different ways, but the invention of the machine gun had the biggest impact on the war. …show more content…

Before the industrial revolution soldiers rode in on horses and fought standing face to face with one shot rifles. Because of the machine gun standing face to face to fight would not work anymore because everyone would die in a matter of seconds. Soldiers had to build trenches and bunkers to protect themselves from all the new weaponry. Soldiers would stay in these treanches and bunkers for days and even weeks at a time. This made it very hard for progress to be made in the battles because both sides would be scare to go out into no man’s land. No man’s land is in the middle of the two sides trenches were it is almost impossible to survive. Another way the tactics changed is soldiers would sit far away from the battle field and used long range artillery to take people out. People found ways to slowly kill there enemy, but be save in the backlines. These new tactics made each battle to last for weeks or even months with very little progress being
