This essay discusses the experiences and contributions made by different migrant groups, in Australia, between the years of 1850 and 1901. In particular, the Japanese pearl divers and their impacts on the development of Australia as a nation will be evaluated. It is believed that the Japanese pearl divers contributed to the making of Australia by assisting with the expansion of the Australian pearl industry, while adding their culture and ways of life to the country. Many different contributions were passed on through the country after their arrival in Australia. Some of these contributions were linked to the pearl industry like diving techniques, while others had an impact on the nation and its culture as a whole. A short term contribution includes incorporating unique Japanese diving skills allowing the divers to stay under water for up to two minutes (Uw360, 2021). Their tactful diving skills helped Australia lead as one of the top pearl providers globally, resulting that post World War two they were supplying over half of the pearls (WA Migration stories, n.d.). Although these tactics aren’t used as much now, they still assisted Australia back in the first place. The Japanese assisted Australia in ways other than the pearl industry, by adding their rich culture to the country. Implementing their unique dishes, leading to stores selling their food, using their language and teaching it, following to schools educating the Japanese language and even the belief of Buddhism, derived from Japan (Chara Scroope, 2021).
