Concentration camps were created to dehumanize and to demoralize the Jews before they could destroy the Germans. Dehumanization occurred by surrounding them with death, disease, and unhygienic conditions. They also dehumanized them by the constant threat of starvation, and forcing them to eat like dogs. The Germans demoralized them by the strict routine that if not followed, led to death. This led to many people with the choice of work or die. The popular welcome “There is only one way out of here: through the chimney.”(qtd. In OWL-Space, purpose of concentration camps) was a popular way to demoralize newcomers. The commander of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, said “We, the SS must carry out this order. If it is not carried out now, then the jews will later on destroy the German people.”(qtd. The laws also forced the Jews to carry identification papers at all times.
