Frederick Douglass’s Impact Frederick was a slave in the 1800s and he was in the “Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass”. In this narrative, he tries to make the idea that all men are created equal. Frederick is not only trying to change the idea, he's also trying to show he doesn't want to be treated like a slave anymore. He shows them when he talks about how the slave holders fed/took care of the slaves. Not to mention the lying about the slaves' happiness or how the slaves were just as good as the animals. To start off, the book states “Once every year we get two shirts, one jacket and one pair of pants the whole year”(Douglass 30). This shows they got treated poorly and the clothes didn't help when it came to harsh winters. It also shows they got treated badly when it says they got eight pounds of pork and one bushel of corn meal for a whole year, which would be hard to last them a year. The book also says all the clothes the slaves got “could not have consisted of more than 7 dollars”(page 30). This shows the slaves did not take good care. …show more content…
The government also lied to the people saying the slaves were getting treated well in (Douglass, pg32). The slaves sang these songs really just because it helped them get through the day this way. Back to the misjudgment of the happiness of the slaves, slavery went on for longer than it should have because everybody was being lied to about the slaves being happy and treated well.
