Vincent Van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in the southern Netherlands, he was the son of a pastor. On 27 July 1890, suffering from depression, Van Gogh shot himself. He died two days later.
Vincent Van Gogh was a distinctive and rare man. He did not even start to paint until the age of 27. Previously he had tried other professions, but he just didn’t fit with them. He endeavored to be a minister, a missionary, an art dealer, and a teacher. Not a single one of these careers matched him however. He had much assistance from his younger brother, Theo. Theo helped out Vincent emotionally and monetarily as he started his new art career. Vincent Van Gogh was nearly a self-taught painter. In this painting there is great use of many principles and elements of art. The wavy lines that signify the sky are utilizing the line and the way it curves gives the feeling of a moving sky. The figures are all wavy and undefined. This will give the impression of a true night with nothing perfect about it. The texture of the lines has short strokes instead of long and drawn out strokes. The colors are mainly calm colors, with blues and greens. The cool colors clam the picture and give a sense of stability. There is the yellow within the stars that make them appear to stand out and hook a person’s attention. The movement of the painting shows the real life aura that Van Gogh was painting from. There is an stress on the tree-like object and how it reaches all the way to the sky, whereas the little church building barely reaches the mountains.
