College Football in the 1920’s served as a stepping stone to an American tradition and revolutionized sports in this country. Much different than the game as we know it now, football in the 1920’s was a display of strategy and toughness rather than athletic skill. Teams from the Northeast and Midwest dominated as the phenomenon slowly grew to the South and West. Early legends of the game such as The Four Horsemen, Red Grange, and Knute Rockne provided star power that created a rapid growth in popularity at the time. In addition to the rise of college football, the 1920’s hosted the birth of professional football, which raised competition and set the stage for years to come.
Early football was a vicious game. By the late 1800 's the public started to speak out strongly against the game. FOOTBALL FOOTBALL. The game of American football as played today by high school, college, and professional teams grew out of rugby-style football which in the mid-1870s replaced a largely kicking game known as association football. Although initially played on village greens and on college fields, the first intercollegiate game took place on 6 November 1869 when Rutgers defeated Princeton 6–4 in a soccer-style game. Five years later, Montreal's McGill University playing at Harvard introduced rugby football, which would be rapidly adopted by eastern teams.
The birth date of football is thought to be November of 1869. Initially, football was comprised of two games: running and kicking. The two games merged together and the ball began to slightly stretch out in order to accommodate more types of uses. Also, in the early games of football, there were 20 players on the field from each team and therefore it was more closely related to rugby. Currently, all footballs used by the NFL are made by Wilson.
American football originated from the sport, rugby, in Great Britain. Rugby was played with a spherical ball and did not allow players to run with it. Football was introduced to the United States around the 1860’s. At this time, the sport was not as popular in the United States and was played occasionally. In 1870, a football convention was held at the Rossin House Hotel in New York (Collins 4).
They had to make rules therefor no one could cheat or get hustled. The oldest rule recorded was in 1744 that was written on a handkerchief. There is only one rule that has never changed and that is how far the pitcher stands back while throwing the ball. Cricket is a game played with two teams. Both teams have 11 players on the field and a twelfth man on the bench in case anyone gets hurt.
The rules and the way it was played were still very rugby like, this was until a man named Walter Camp came along and completely changed the way this game was played. Camp was an unreal player at Yale University and is known as the father of American football. Camp helped write the first rules for American football — which were already being played in universities on the East Coast and in Canada in about 1876. These changes included reducing the number of people from 15 players to 11 players and replacing the traditional rugby scrum to the kickoff. Camp also created the rule that a team needed to gain 5 yards in three plays in order to keep possession.
