Based on the novel, Mr. Lewis wanted to tell his story and persuade others to not let their background affect their future. During his life, he faced a lot of challenges and wasn’t expected to succeed. In the novel, Mr. Lewis said, “But school was important to me, and it was ultimately the reason got involved in the Civil Right Movement” (March pg. 35). There he worked hard to become a minister at American Baptist College. He had a very large love for God, which was a very large reason why he was able to keep mental fortitude and have an undying strength for his cause. Lewis was a dreamer. He dreamed of going to Morehouse College, the school where MLK learned. He dreamed of becoming a minister, and making a difference in the world.
Many of the accomplishments he made in the earlier years of his life demonstrate his future participating in the Freedom Rides as well as other protests. His childhood life surrounded by the excitement of the movement only initiated a spark of passion for him, while his personality and justified morals were the part driving him (Adam Pawluk). His childhood had conflicting influencers, his parents and his idols, yet he still decided to choose African American rights over anything (Arsenault). Also Lewis’s strong religious background helped him have a strong moral compass for right and wrong.
Thus, if kids are looking to famous athletes as role models, but those athletes are getting arrested, starting fights, or even disrespecting the country, these superstars are setting a bad example for the kids who look to them as role models. They are the so-called “role models” of the sports fans within their universities. The athletes need to show positive behavior inside and out-side the classroom in order to influence their peers in a positive way.
