Throughout the course of our nation’s history there have been many great seasons of change brought about by the peaceful resistance of laws. While peacefully resisting laws does cause short term problems, the goal is to fix a much larger issue. The peaceful resistance of laws, or civil disobedience, was the same tactic used by Rosa Parks and many others during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s to annul the laws of segregation. While the Civil Rights Movement was a phenomenal use of civil disobedience, one still must ask where to draw the line? When does knowingly transgressing a law for a greater purpose become more detrimental than helpful? The answer to this question lies in the purpose of the protest. Overall, peacefully resisting laws does in fact positively influence our society because when a large group of people are involved the act gives a voice to the society’s needs; however, civil disobedience becomes hurtful to society when the protest is done for the wrong reasons. …show more content…
The purpose behind the boycott of buses in Montgomery, Alabama, was to end the segregation of blacks and whites on public buses in a peaceful manner; the protest was a success. Thanks to action taken by a few dedicated people a step was made towards making our great nation truly equal. The Montgomery Bus Boycott positively impacted our society because of its purpose. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat, she was representing the fight for equality, a cause which would go on to reform racist policies and alter the mindsets of the American people for the better. Parents forbid certain activities which their children may see as fun for good reasons, and just like a strict parent the purposes behind peacefully resisting laws are what truly divide helpful and hurtful
