I started to prepare this week’s group discussion since last week because I have never been a student leader academically for a group before. I read through all the assigned materials. The Arrival by Shaun Tan had no words and was only illustrations. Yang’s article on Carmen showed the advantages to use graphic novels to teach students. How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? By Jane Yolen & Mark Teague (as my read aloud material) was picked to compare with The Arrival. For my first discussion question, all my group numbers say yes that there are definitely connections between picture books and the society. The author visualized those bad behaviors from the point view of children. After narrated all naughty actions kids might do before they said good night, author gave the story a nice ending. Children could find their own images in the picturebook, so that they could constraint their behaviors properly. In this way, picturebooks acted like a lighthouse of standards for children. Also “picturebook could reflect reality based on how the book was portrayed like life situation” (by group member Jade Loveless), children could see how other people dressed differently due to their vary culture backgrounds. Illustrated picturebooks were more likely to reveal the reality vividly. Last, like the graphic novel The Arrival, Shaun Tan illustrated a young man left his home to find a new land for his family due to some monsters in their town. This story could also relate to the experience of a new generation of immigrants or people’s aspiration to the happy and healthy life.
