The word “great” as defined by the Webster’s Universal College dictionary means notable and remarkable. The term great is most commonly used to describe Charlemagne the great and Constantine the great. These people did not earn this title based on who their family was. They earned it. Whether they were a conquer or an amazing king, these people are forever known in history. One person that is greatly accomplished and earned the title of “Great” is Alexander III of Macedon. Born on September 20, 356 B.C. Alexander was destined for greatness. His parents, Olympias and Phillip II of Macedon got him the best teacher so that he could one day be a great leader. In his nearly 13 years on the throne, Alexander had never lost a battle. His great success lead to him being significantly knowing to lead men into battle with impressive speed and courage. Alexanders first big move as king was to pick up where his father left off and taking fully control of Greece. To take total control, Alexander had to conquer the Persian empire which at the time was controlled by Darius III. Over the years, Alexander was able to push the Persian forces back. First, he conquered Asia Minor and eventually was able to conquer the majority of Greece and a bit of Egypt, where he met Cleopatra. However, with all of Alexanders success, he meets with a near death experience. The leader of the Persian empire, Darius III, was smart enough to pull back some of his forces and pull back in order to strike Alexanders army hard. For the first time during Alexanders military career, Alexander was showing a point of frailty. Nevertheless, Alexander was able to overcome his moment of weakness and take control of the western portion of the Persians’ empire. Alexander’s ability to overcome his moment of weakness, demonstrates his
