Courage can be shown in many ways and it was shown many times and through many different people. The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee starts out when Scout, the narrator in the story, and her older brother Jem try to draw out Boo Radley from his home . He is someone that kids are afraid of because of what happened at their house and he has been hiding in his house ever since. Later in the book Jem and Scout are growing older and they learn more about how the world is. They both experience a trial that starts to open their eyes to the real world. Later in the book after Jem and Scout leave a Halloween festival they are attacked and Jem breaks his arm but someone stops their attacker, it is Boo Radley. She stands up for Atticus a lot when he took the case of defending the black man Tom Robinson and even fights with someone at school and her cousin. When Tom Robinson was in jail for the trial, Atticus stood watch. When a group of people come up to Atticus in the middle of the night Jem, Scout and their friend Dill step in the way. It was because of what Scout said that made the men go away. “Ain’t nobody gonna do Jem that way.” (153) This passage was said by Scout and she showed courage by defending her brother Jem. This shows courage because it could be scary to try and stand up to adults who might not take Scout seriously. Boo was not thinking about himself in the situation, but he was thinking about the kids. “ He was carrying Jem.” (263 ) It was Boo who had helped. He had courage by going out and trying to not only grab the kids and get them away from the person who attacked them, but also to stop the person. He killed the person who attacked them and this could end up hurting him because of his past. Boo wasn’t thinking about himself and the consequences that would happen to him and that takes courage because it is easy to think about oneself. Boo also showed courage by risking him being caught outside when he gave the blanket to Scout earlier in the book, but he was more worried about someone else and had the courage to help Scout.
