As presented in Lord of the Flies, Golding suggests that human nature is vile and evil. This is an accurate display, proven by literature. Common phrases that present this are power corrupts and desire clouds judgment. In the novels To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm are examples of how human nature is selfish and manipulative. In literature, Animal Farm is a perfect reflection on the corruption of power, while To Kill a Mockingbird gives insight into why the actions of violence occur. IN Lord of the Flies, Jack’s desire to be a leader not only causes problems for the boys, but also manipulates him to get his way. While Ralph created the way of speaking and government, Jack immediately bends rules to make him more powerful. Just for his own benefit, he changes the rules stating, “the conch doesn't count on top of the mountain, so you shut up,” (Golding 42). This manipulation is one of the many ways to present evil. The changing of rules, done by a figure of power like Jack, presents true evil actions. Similar use of manipulation can be seen in the novel Animal Farm by another figure of leadership, Nepoleon. Also using a position of leadership, Napoleon changed rules to benefit the pigs. The exploitation took place in the alteration of the farm rules. This alteration coerced the animals to believe the rule was “no animal shall kill any other animal without cause...(and) convinced them that their memories had been at fault,” (Orwell, 91-98). These insidious actions show Napoleon's corruption and overall evil mannerisms. This abuse of power in Animal Farm is parallel to real events that occurred in Germany by dictators in power. This further shows how human nature has always resorted to evil by displaying how power
