The main character in the book “Green Angel” written by Alice Hoffman, is Green/Ash. Green is a fifteen year old girl that suffers the loss of her family at the beginning of the book. Because of that she changes physically, emotionally, and psychologically. At one point of the story she changes so much that she feels that she has to change her name entirely. Green changes physically. When she changes physically she becomes depressed. She did many things to change her physical appearance. One thing she was she cut her hair super short, almost like a boy. Another thing she does is that she tattoos herself. When she tattoos herself she choose images that would represent something important to her, like her family. One image she chooses is a rose and that is for her sister Aurora. She also changes the way she dresses. She starts wearing all black, a leather jacket with thorns in it, and her father’s boots that she had put nails in. Her physical changes are a result of her emotional changes. All of the changes she went through indicate her being depressed. Throughout the story, Green/Ash also changes emotionally and psychologically. She starts to take care of a greyhound named Ghost. She physically takes care of Ghost but he emotionally and psychologically takes care of her. By helping Ghost it also gives her a sense of control which she needs because she feels as though she has no control since she couldn't control her family's deaths. She starts off by being compassionate for the greyhound but it slowly makes her compassionate for humans as well. She becomes compassionate for the mute boy. Also she is compassionate to her neighbor, which is almost like a mother figure to Green/Ash. As she becomes more compassionate she becomes more like who she used to be, Green, not
