In the book Inside out and back again, written by Lai, is a story about Ha and her mother, father, teacher, and classmates. Ha lives in Vietnam in 1975 and eventually moves to Alabama because of war. Her story is just like a refugees story. They both left their country in hope of finding safety. All refugees have struggles they need to overcome. They get “turned inside out “and eventually “come back again”. A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape the disaster they are in. Ha has a hopeful personality in Vietnam and once the war begins and she has to leave, she gets turned inside out. Ha comes back again once they get to Alabama.

Whether it’s going back home or getting used to the new ways of their life they go back to who they used to be. Ha comes back in the end of the novel once they move to Alabama and learns to stand up for herself. There is a kid who has been bullying Ha and she finally learns how to handle it. “I shift my upper body to the left, legs sturdy, eyes on the blur that flies past me.” (Lai 225) Standing in a sturdy position and standing up straight are both ways of showing confidence. When pink boy comes up to Ha she learned that it was time to stand up for herself and show that she is not scared of him. This shows Ha is coming back because she is gaining confidence. Another way Ha is coming back is making friends. Once Ha stood up for herself, everybody admired her. She heard them talk about how great she is. “...someone is always...someone is always...someone is always…” (Lai 229) It is a pretty good feeling to have people saying good things about you. People you don’t even know admire you. Ha is coming back because she is making more friends. Refugees get separated from their friends and families all the time, but eventually make more friends. They are sent to asylums with multiple other refugees and they eventually become closer and become friends. “...the right to a safe asylum…” (Refugees: Who, Where, Why P.2) While refugees are trying to escape the bad situation they are in, they get sent to a safe place. Being safe and out of war is a really good feeling which is helping the refugees “come back”. Having friends and feeling comfortable are both examples of how Ha and other refugees “come
