Athena Strecker 1. Scout is a young girl who is filled with hope and innocence. She is very defendant of her family and can be a bit rude, but is very intelligent and outgoing. Jem is Scout's older brother. At the beginning, he is very close with Scout but starts pushing her away due to Boo until the court case, when he is broken and becomes much more emotional, or in Scout’s words “like a girl”. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout. He is very intelligent despite not going to school and a good father. He believes in doing what’s right, proven when he defends Tom and tells the kids to stop bother the Radley’s. Calpurnia is the Finch’s housemaid. It is told from Scout’s point of view. We know this because it often says “I” and characters refer to the narrator as Scout. 3. The place is Maycomb County, Alabama. The time period is around 1935. It is during the Great Depression and the start of World War II. 4. At first, Mrs. Caroline gets angry at Scout for knowing how to read and write and tells Scout to tell her father to stop teaching her and disallows reading and writing. Next, when Walter Jr. does not have his lunch, Mrs. Caroline offers him money. Walter refuses because he knows he will be unable to repay her, but Mrs. Caroline keeps trying give him money. Scout tries to explain why he can not take the money, which unfortunately angers Mrs. Caroline. Lastly, The Dewey Decimal system itself, as Scout did not like it, mostly because of the teacher. 5. The main external conflict is the court case. The court case showed how badly black people were treated and how unfair society can be, which broke Jem. Not only that, from the case came an angry Ewell, who wanted revenge because he believes Atticus made a fool of him. This led to him almost killing the children and Jem breaking his arm, along with bothering other people who believed wronged him as
