There are very few things in this world that can captivate over 65 million people in 50 different countries. There are even fewer things that can hold its audience's attention for a total of 10 billion hours each month. What I am talking about? What could possibly bring all these people together? Netflix. Netflix is a DVD rental and Internet-streaming service that has the power to affect the whole world. Today, Netflix is predominantly known for its Internet streaming service, but when it was founded in 1997 by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings it only rented out DVD's. By 2002 over 190,000 DVDs were being mailed out each day. In only three years this number would increase by more than 400%! The amount of Netflix members rose to 4.2 million people. Since then, Netflix has moved on to bigger and better things. In 2007, ten years after its founding, Netflix introduced online streaming. This allowed people to watch videos from their computer. This feature became available on many more devices within the next three years. Members could now watch movies from their TVs, game consoles, and mobile devices. After this, Netflix's earnings increased by 63% and the number of subscribers was over 20 million. Many countries across the globe were able to subscribe to Netflix by the year 2014.

Netflix has aided people to connect and bond over a common interest. Whether it be The Goonies or Doctor Who, people can watch and share these videos whenever and wherever they want. In today's modern culture, Netflix has become a daily part of a person's routine. It is socially acceptable to "binge watch" an entire TV series in one week.
