Shakespeare started a significant impact on his society, and as people’s prejudices and judgements matured into the modern day, his impact has become even more obvious. For example, he influenced greatly women’s rights, the english literature, and the acceptance of interracial relationships. The play, Othello, in particular portrays both of those ideas now embraced mostly by modern society but would have been relatively new at his time, let alone shown on the live stage.

Shakespeare here is supporting women making their own decisions. He is supporting interracial relationships. And he is supporting following one’s heart over the traditions or laws. These are all modern ideas that most would support now. Juliet, in Romeo and Juliet, also betrays her father’s laws for love, so Shakespeare truly moved the women’s movement ahead early on as women were fighting for the right to decide their own futures.
This also had a major impact on english language and literature. Othello, the protagonist, has his own struggles and conflicts. Iago, the antagonist, lets us see into his mind and the lies he is feeding to Othello. Like today, we all have that one friend who acts like they are there for us, but really is stabbing us in the back. Othello’s main struggles are his jealousy and his own hubris. He is terrified of his pride being damaged. Yet, we all have dealt with jealousy. We all are victims of the “green-eyed monster”
