How does perfectionism affect depression of ADA students? Multiple researchers indicates the existing connection between perfectionism and psychological disorders including depression and anxiety (Blatt, 1995; Flett, Hewitt, Blankstein, & Mosher, 1995). Perfectionism represents the expectation of meeting high performance standards followed by self or others’ criticism. As a result, even though perfectionists achieve success, failure of meeting high standards and fear of mistakes drive them to anxiety, stress and depression (Flett, G. L., Blankstein, 1992). Significant findings indicated that there was a positive relationship between sub dimensions of perfectionism and depression among college students (Erozkan, 2011). According to Research Consortium of Counseling and Psychological Services to Higher Education, 37% of students reported that perfectionism was distressing during their academic years (1995). Noble observed that adaptive perfectionists set realistic standards, were ready for challenge, and accepted their mistakes. The author indicates that students with normal perfectionism gained satisfaction after achieving imposed expectations and had positive self-esteem. Those students had significantly lower level of depressions compared to maladaptive perfectionists (Christina L. Noble, 2014). In the same way, Frost states that even though adaptive perfectionists set high standards, they able to put limitations to their expectations. Moreover, adaptive students did not concern over mistakes and felt less depressive than maladaptive perfectionists feel (Frost, R.O, 1993).
