verybody loves to do, however, without the right ingredients the preparation can be a difficult task. Salt, water, and milk are extremely important in this operation. Water’s freezing point is 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius. As some may not be aware of, this temperature is only accurate with pure water. If other particles and substances were added to the water, the freezing point would no longer be the same. So, how does salt alter a solution when it is dissolved into water? When dealing with homemade ice cream “change phase”, “freezing point-depression”, and “temperature” are extremely important words to know. Temperature is the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, measured in Fahrenheit or Celsius. Change phase is the transformation from one state (solid, liquid, or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition. Water can changed from solid, liquid, or gas under the right circumstances. In this experiment, salt will be added to water, meaning the same as adding a solute to a solvent. The solvent is the water while salt is the solute. When salt is added, the freezing …show more content…
When one begins to add salt to this mixture, however, this will disrupt it. So when someone begins to add salt to the water we will see that the freezing point of the water will then become lower. Because salt lowers the freezing point of ice this will then cause the ice to melt which, in result, will begin to pull energy away from the surrounding areas and also pulling heat away from the cream. As we are able to see the temperature lower, we are unable to watch as the molecules in pure water start to slow down. Due to how slowly the molecules move, they no longer have the capability to escape intermolecular attractions between water molecules. As a result from all of this, water will then turn to ice from the lattice of water
