In “Do Sports Build Character or Damage it?” Mark Edmundson explains the pros and cons of children who grow up playing football. Firstly, he believes the perseverance it takes to show up for hard practices is useful later in life. 1. Every college athletes have put many hours of their hard work towards their respective sport but lack their integrity to achieve their degree. College athletes should stress more on their academic and intelligent capabilities than focusing on their athleticism. Athletes should not underestimate the difficulty of entering a professional league.
Sports, in general, are very important for a number of reasons. Sports can keep you physically and mentally fit at all ages. It also builds relationships and teamwork skills. Lacrosse is an excellent
I was voted team player of the year for my basketball team during my freshmen year but, I was also team captain of my soccer team during my junior and senior year. I was taught to make everyone feel part of a team and to make that team feel like a family. I was also taught that someone needs to take control and make decisions that are best for the team, and not just myself. I think that sports will help how I am with my own family in the future. The same way that my family now affects the actions I took during my sports and in my education.
Growing up, I was always interested in sports. From a young age, I played both baseball and basketball. As I got older, however, I realized that I would eventually have to choose between the two. This decision weighed heavily on my mind, as I knew that whatever choice I made would have a significant impact on my life and the people around me.
Sports is everything to me, it gets me through life, teaches me lessons, and makes me who I am. My first sport that I ever played was baseball. Whenever me and my family went to the park it was to do drills and play baseball. Being the youngest and believe it or not the shortest it seemed that's all we did.
Sports are an immense part of our culture here in the United States. Families gather in their living room and lounge at night to watch sports together. I have played hockey for 13 years and have let hockey practically shape my life. The textbook “Interpersonal Communication” by Sarah Trenholm and Arthur Jensen has a quote about forming identities that can be applied to me “Identities are not always given however, some people create their own identities throughout life by their lifestyle and activities. (45)” That quote can be applied to my own life because I wasn’t born and ready to play hockey. None of my immediate family played and the only reason I started
Social identity is how an individual uses their role in a group to define who they are in life. They look at family roles, career roles, and friendship roles to identify who they are as a person. Some even use their role as a fan of a team to show who they are. When an individual relates strongly to a certain team, being a member of this group is essential. “For many people, sports fandom is an integral social identity component” (Sanderson, 2013, p. 489).
People think sports are just sports, but in reality to athletes it’s an escape from life, it’s our second family, and most important we feel like we belong there. Sports make you feel like your apart of something bigger than a team. Softball has been my second family and I have made so many amazing friendships that might last for the rest of life and even if they don’t, I will never forget all my friends or the memories that I have playing ball with
I have a very personal connection with sports. In fact, sports are one of the things that changed my life. When I was ten, I struggled with my weight. I know this sounds young to be dealing with weight problems, but they started young for me. Being one of the tallest kids in my grade, and the only tall girl, I already stood out like a sore thumb.
Mistaken Identity Basketball is my favorite sport. I admire the courage and admiration exhibited by players each night when they step out on the court but there was one player who stood out from the rest. He was John Simmons. John was everyone’s favorite player. He was the type of player who could bring a crowd just by coming to your neighbourhood.
The author Thelma Gomez, says “Playing sports is an important elemen5t in the lives of many American children.” And she is correct. Sports can make kids the next David Wright, the next LeBron James, the next Eli Manning, or the next Lionel Messi. The best part of sports is that you're improving your physical health, psychological health, social skills, and academic benefits. Physical and phychological health can benefit a child in many ways.
My motivation for watching sports is that I enjoy it and it helps with interacting with other people which fall under diversion and the social utility aspect. Another form of media that I use to help
This can help you avoid getting bogged down by negative thoughts” (Source 3). So, sports are more beneficial than harmful because they help take away those negative thoughts that lead to that dangerous path. Also, participation can defend you from becoming depressed because you usually play a sport because it is exciting and you enjoy playing, or like the support system it gives you. So you become happy overall, since you’re doing something that you love and are passionate about. It creates an environment that is used to allow a person to calm down, relax, and have fun.
