Sports are an immense part of our culture here in the United States. Families gather in their living room and lounge at night to watch sports together. Friends and families will go to games and events together to support their favorite teams and athletes. Athletes are able to make money off of their skills by playing sports. Sports are a very important piece that gives people entertainment. Although, sports can be used for more than just pure entertainment. People have the ability to make money off of sports games by placing bets on them. Sports betting is legal in Nevada, Delaware, Montana, and Oregon, but prohibited everywhere else in the country. Nevada is an example of just how beneficial that money is for them. Nevada does not charge the casinos much for the gross tax percentage, also known as the earnings after a customer wins. The number that is charged is 6.75%. According to a Nevada Resort Association estimate, gaming revenue collected by the tourism and hospitality industries accounted for about 46% of the state’s general fund in 2010. (Johnson) “Many states have transitioned to using lotteries and casinos as a way to raise money for education and other needs that citizens living in that particular state will need.” (Johnson) Unfortunately for them the revenue from that is not even comparable to the states like Nevada who have legal sports betting. There just is not as much money in the casinos or buying lottery tickets to keep up with the money that is coming from the sports betting world. The states will benefit from conceiving sports gambling as a legalized act. People will gamble and enjoy doing so. There are obvious reasons to why it has not happened yet because people do realize just popular sports gambling is and how much revenue it brings in for a state. It is however only legal in four states. Out of those four why are there not more? It is already legal there so why not in more states throughout the country. The main reasoning behind why they don’t is the Supreme Court shoots it down because they believe that it is against the 10th Amendment. That’s an understandable position they have on the topic. That would be the way the Supreme Court would and more than most should stand on the issue. There should be more leeway on this just because it is already legal in multiple other states and they are able to have it passed to where they can do these practices. Everyone already does it so by making it legal in majority of states would make the most sense for sports
