The control rods job is to absorb some of the neutrons that are created in the fission reactions in the chin of reactions. The purpose of this is to reduce the number of neutrons available with in the reaction to continue the chain reaction. The control rods change the amount of available neutrons there are in the reactions, to change this the control rods are moved up and down inside the reactor core, the more or less neutrons they absorb. The amount of neutrons absorbed decreases as the control rods are lifted up so the reactions will happen faster which causes the reactors to get hotter and vice versa when the control rods are moved down. Moderators are used in junction with control rods, moderators is a material that used to slows down
