Would you instead leave your friends, family, and the only place you ever have been just to change a rule in the community? Well, this is the decision that Jonas has to choose in the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. Jonas lives in a community of sameness and he is not even related to his family. Jonas gets the unique job of Receiver, where he receives memories of pain, and emotions, experiences death, and can experience color, unlike everyone in his community. It eventually is too much for him and Jonas wants to leave his community. In this essay, I will explain how Jonas leaving his community Will force everyone to experience emotions and all of the memories Jonas had, as well as give Jonas a chance at having a better life.
First of all, all of Jonas’s memories will be passed on to the community. If Jonas leaves, all of the memories Jonas has will be passed onto the community, forcing them to experience all of Jonas’s memories. For example, the novel states, “This will force the others to remember, and experience both pain and joy.” This shows that the community will have to face all of the memories that Jonas has had. If Jonas leaves, he does not have to worry about how flawed his community is and can forget about it. For example, the novel states, “People wear the same clothes; eat the same food; their houses are the same; and most of them look the same as well.” This shows that Jonas will be able to have a second chance at his life and be happy. Jonas was already not happy with the way he is forced to live, and wanted to make his own choices. Also, he would again be able to forget about his old life and live a new one with his own choices and decisions. All in all, Jonas can now enjoy his life and forget about his old worries and
