In “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol S. Dweck, she writes about how there are two different mindsets, the “fixed mindset” and the “growth mindset”. The difference between the two mindsets is that a ‘fixed mindset’ is believing that people only have a certain amount of different qualities that cannot be changed. This means that whatever characteristic or features you have, this cannot be changed and it defines who you are. However, the other mindset is a ‘growth mindset’, which is the belief that your qualities can change over time with effort. This mindset means that whatever characteristics or features you have, we are able to change and grow. It means that we have the potential to grow and be able to reach a high level of …show more content…
Having a growth mindset is the “belief that your basic qualities are things that you can cultivate through your efforts.” (Dweck, pg. 7). With a growth mindset, you are always seeking a challenge and trying to find something that can push you to become a better person or student. With these challenges, you have the ability to grow especially from failures and learn from any criticism. Opposite of a fixed mindset, you are always willing to seek any improvements you can and understand that there will always be something for you to work on. One line that stood out to me was when Dweck was talking about “What does a Growth-Minded Teacher look like?” One of the responses was when they were talking about Marva Collin, who was a teacher that taught children in Chicago who had been judged and discarded. Dweck talks about Collin’s first mentor who said that “a good teacher is one who continues to learn along with the students.” (Dweck, pg. 201). With some adults, they have this idea that they already know everything, however there is always going to be something we learn everyday. We should have the mindset that we should always be willing to learn and grow, and as a matter of fact, we do not know everything. In the end, it is important to have a growth mindset and practice this mindset in our classroom. We should want our students to have a mindset that learning …show more content…
Especially for their age, they are going through so much change and so many different experiences going on, that they need to have a teacher that can be a role model to them. It is going to be important for me to ensure that my students know that my classroom is an open-minded space, in which there will be growth and students striving for a goal throughout the year. As the school year progresses, my students will have the opportunity to grow and change. I want them to believe in themselves and be able to reach their full potential as not just a student, but as a person as well. One of my activities I did at the beginning of the year was to meet with my students and we went over goals that the students would strive for. There was a short-term goal and long-term goal in which would be a challenge for them and something they would really have to work towards. This would lead to other meetings throughout the year and we would go over if the student has been reaching their goals and see how they might be progressing towards them. This gives the students something to strive for and be able to seek improvement throughout the school year. We are going to be a classroom that we learn from our experiences and move on from it. Students get upset over getting a bad grade on an assignment or assessment, due to the fact that it was just a
