How Does The Relationship Between The Number Of Water Rises In The Beaker

Aim: My aim of this experiment is to discover if there is a relationship between the number of lit candles and the height the water rises in the beaker. Variables: Independent: The independent variable is the amount of candles used each time. (An independent variable is something in the practical the changes.) Dependent- The dependent variable is the height the water will rise in the beaker. This will be measured in millimetres. (A dependent variable is something in the practical that is measured.) Controls- The control variable is something in the practical that needs to be kept the same to prevent any effects to the practical. The controls include the amount of water in the dish, same sized beaker, same amount of plasticine and a wooden …show more content…

Why did this happen? This happened because a flame needs a fuel and oxygen to burn, when we put the beaker over the water the oxygen turns to a suction forcing the water to rise. 3. Describe the shape of the graph you have plotted. The pattern of the candle and rising water was very unique. The water level continued to rise until candle 4, then after the fifth candle the water level went down, up, down, up, until the last candle. 4. Does you graph suggest a relationship between the number of candles and the rise in water level? The graph doesn’t suggest much of a relationship, although there is a very slight relationship in the first few candles as they kept the water level rising more and more each time. 5. Predict what would happen if you kept the number of candles the same but changed the following instead: • The volume or depth of the water in the dish If the depth of the water in the dish was deeper there wouldn’t be as much water to rise. I think this because the water would be heavier holding itself back. If there were to be less depth the water level would be more water level. I think this because the water would be lighter because of the depth of the water allowing the water to shoot up. • The diameter of the …show more content…

The water would just rise over the plasticine. 6. Propose a reason why the water rose in the experiment The experiment does this because the flame needs oxygen to burn and when the flame is trapped so is the oxygen, hence why the flam slowly dies, as the flam breathes the last of the oxygen the flame turns to a suction and sucks the water up. Conclusion In conclusion of the practical, my hypothesis was mostly correct, which was as a candle was added the higher the water level will rise. This happen up until candle 5 onwards, this is because it went low – high – low – high. I believe it went like this because the candles were close together so two candles acted as one. Errors: Random- My random errors consisted of a mismeasurement and how close the candles were to each other. A random error is an error that you can help. Systematic- Some systematic errors of this practical are the width of the beaker, the size of the flames when putting the beaker over them and if the heat evaporated the water or
