The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey is a book written to lay out a plan for financial freedom for life. The book describes the concept of financial freedom as having a well laid out plan for retirement and zero debt. Throughout the book, Dave Ramsey talks about different techniques that he teaches to those who wish to begin their “Total Money Makeover Challenge”. He also helps reinforce his teachings by providing examples of real people that have taken part in the “Total Money Makeover Challenge” and have had great success. While I tend to be skeptical about any type of self-help book, especially one that heavily pushes a set way of doing things, I was curious about the contents of this book. Dave Ramsey has a concept called the “Debt Snowball”. The idea of this concept is that you take all the loans that you have and arrange them from smallest to largest and pay them off in that order. This is done in hopes that the momentum that you gain from paying off these debts keeps carrying as you pay off the bigger debts, much like a snowball rolling down the hill. I feel that this technique could be very useful as it makes it seem like you are constantly improving through the smaller wins of paying off the smaller debts. This not only helps keep motivation up but also gives you more obtainable goals which in the long term only helps you and makes you more financially stable. This technique is one that I have started to implement in my life and has been rather helpful in paying off loans that I owe. Continuing, while I do feel that the “Debt Snowball” is a great technique, there were things that Dave Ramsey stated that I felt were out of touch or too restrictive to fit my lifestyle. I am by no means a millionaire or the most financially well-off person but, I do feel like as far as my money goes and for my age, I have a good base that is only
