The assigned source focuses on Thomas Friedman’s perspective on the history of globalization and how globalization has affected the progression of the world. According to the National Geographic, globalization is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place. Thomas Friedman says that there were 3 eras of globalization, Globalization 1.0, which began in 1942, Globalization 2.0 and Globalization 3.0 which started in the 2000’s. Transportation is one of the most significant ways globalization has made our world smaller. Whether that be transporting goods or transporting people, individuals say that the subject of transportation and globalization are deeply intertwined. If there was never any transportation, globalization would never exist as the movement of people and goods is crucial to globalization. As countries have become more integrated into the global economy, trade between nations has blossomed. This has led to a huge increase in the amount and variety of products available to consumers. Now, due to efficient shipment of goods, everyone has access to a range of products, from exotic foods and clothing to advanced technology and cars. Globalization has made a world where different products can reach new markets and customers all over the world, providing access to new sources of revenue and growth. An example of how products are transported would be containers, they have made transport much easier and more reliable to ship and import goods. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, Canada imported $768 billion worth of goods and services in 2019. In 2020, goods and services imports from other countries made up 33% of Canada’s gross domestic product. This was possible due to globalization and the evolution of trade and transport. Most say that Christopher Columbus was the one to kick start globalization when he arrived in the Americas from Europe. Columbus was able to do that because of his voyages on his boat. Efficient transportation and travel has caused the evolution of trade and has opened multiple business and economic opportunities. Travel has exposed us to new ideas, new cultures and new people, which has helped break barriers between people and adapt to our differences.
